The Nasarawa State Disability Rights Commission (NSDRC) has pledged its support for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enhance the participation of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the electoral process.
The Executive Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Saleh Barde Keana, made the commitment when he received the Head of Department, Voter Education, Publicity, Gender and Inclusivity of INEC, Hajia Safiya Garba, who led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the Commission on Monday.
Hajia Safiya said the visit was to formally inform the Commission of the planned visit of an INEC delegation from its Federal Headquarters to Nasarawa State to sensitise PWDs on electoral participation. She said the exercise was part of INEC’s commitment to ensuring an inclusive electoral process in which no one is left behind, in line with the Electoral Act and the Commission’s Gender and Inclusivity Policy.
She stressed the importance of collaborating with the NSDRC to reach PWDs at the grassroots and promote their active participation in elections. Responding, Barde commended INEC for the initiative and described Hajia Safiya as a strong friend and advocate of the disability community.
The NSDRC Chairman assured the INEC delegation of the Commission’s full cooperation, adding that the Commission would mobilise PWDs across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state to participate in the sensitisation exercise. He noted that inclusive participation remains essential to strengthening democracy.
Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration and promoting a more accessible and inclusive electoral process for PWDs in Nasarawa State.
