The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has convened a round-table engagement with key stakeholders to strengthen collaboration on the implementation of its 2026 Work Plan and advance disability inclusion across Nigeria.
The meeting, held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, brought together the Commission’s leadership and representatives of development partners to review priority programmes, assess implementation strategies, and reinforce partnerships. Speaking on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr. Aliyu Agwai, commended participants for their continued commitment to promoting the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities.
Agwai said the stakeholders’ engagement underscored a shared commitment to building an inclusive society where persons with disabilities enjoy equal opportunities and participate fully in national development. He noted that achieving sustainable disability inclusion requires strong partnerships, effective coordination, and access to reliable data for informed policy formulation, planning, and service delivery.
According to him, the meeting provided an opportunity to review progress on key activities, identify implementation challenges, develop practical solutions, and strengthen collaboration for the successful execution of the Commission’s 2026 priority programmes.
A major highlight of the engagement was discussions on the development of the National Disability Management Information System (NDMIS), one of the Commission’s flagship initiatives. Agwai explained that the system would establish a comprehensive national database to generate accurate and up-to-date disability data for planning, policy formulation, programme implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting. He added that the initiative would enhance evidence-based decision-making and improve the Commission’s capacity to monitor disability inclusion nationwide.
Representatives of partner organisations, including ECOWAS, Sightsavers, The Leprosy Mission Nigeria, RedAid Nigeria, and CHAI, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Commission’s efforts to expand disability inclusion programmes and improve the welfare of persons with disabilities across the country.
The meeting was attended by delegations from the partner organisations and other development agencies committed to advancing disability rights in Nigeria. At the close of the engagement, the Commission reaffirmed its resolve to work closely with stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of its 2026 Work Plan in line with the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.
