Disability Agency, Civil Service, Safety Commissions Strengthen Disability Inclusion in Lagos

by Inclusive News Network

The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) has intensified efforts to promote disability inclusion across the state through strategic engagements with the Lagos State Civil Service Commission and the Lagos State Safety Commission.

The General Manager of LASODA, Mrs Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, led the agency’s management team on courtesy visits to both commissions to explore areas of collaboration on disability-inclusive policies, accessible public facilities and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.

During the visit to the Civil Service Commission, its Chairman, Mrs Boladele Dapo-Thomas, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to improving the integration of civil servants with disabilities into the public service. She also highlighted the need to make promotion exercises more disability-inclusive to ensure that employees with disabilities can participate meaningfully in career advancement processes.

Earlier, Oyetunde-Lawal stressed the importance of prioritising disability issues in public service administration, particularly through inclusive employment practices and equitable opportunities for persons with disabilities across government institutions.

At the Lagos State Safety Commission, the Director-General, Mr Lanre Mojola, highlighted measures to improve accessibility and safety in public buildings, including the provision of ramps and accessible parking spaces. Discussions also focused on strengthening accessibility and safety standards in event centres, schools, workplaces and other public spaces.

The engagements emphasised the need to move beyond conventional safety measures by ensuring that persons with disabilities can access public facilities, navigate their environments safely and participate in society with dignity and independence.

Management representatives of the agencies also discussed collaborative approaches to disability advocacy, accessibility monitoring and the adoption of accessibility checklists to identify and address barriers affecting persons with disabilities.

The meetings ended with a shared commitment to strengthening inter-agency collaboration towards building a safer, more accessible and inclusive Lagos State.
