A group advocating for the rights of people with Disabilities (PWD); Association for the Deaf has called on the Oyo State government to provide job opportunities for deaf people.

This call came during the Oyo State Association for the Deaf’s annual public lecture/award presentation on Thursday at the Women Development Centre, Samonda in Ibadan.

Isaac Akinfenwa, the group’s chairman, said that the state government must provide support to persons with disabilities through job opportunities and empowerment programmes.

“In order to improve the lives of the deaf in the state, the state government should establish an interpretation service centre that would give free services to the deaf at the state government’s expense”, Akinfenwa appealed.

He added that using interpreters will be extremely beneficial in fostering deaf people’s ability to have a proper orientation of their day-to-day lives, just as their hearing counterparts do in all societies.

Responding, Barrister Ayodele Adekanmbi, who is the Executive Assistant to the Oyo State Government of People With Disabilities (PWD), also spoke at the event and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the development of people with disabilities.

Adekanmbi added that in a bid to give aid to the education of the people with special needs, the state government has approved the distribution of special equipment to the school of the deaf across the state.

Dr Akanni Oladayo, the event’s guest speaker and a Counselling Psychologist, urged persons with special needs to adopt the resilient attitude of competing with non-special needs in all aspects of life.

Oladayo encouraged PWDs to seek assistance from support networks in order to overcome obstacles and solve some problems.
