Deaf Association Harps on Implementation of Disability Rights Law in Ogun

The Ogun State Chapter of the Association of the Deaf joined their counterparts around the world to celebrate the 2023 World Sign Language Day with an appeal to stakeholders, to support the use of Sign Language to aid the education and learning of the Deaf.

While rounding off the International week of the Deaf and Sign Language with the theme “A World Where Deaf People Everywhere Can Sign Anywhere”, the Chairman, Ogun State Association of the Deaf, Mr Rasheed Salami called on government and other stakeholders to implement the disability rights law already signed in December 2017 by former Ogun state governor, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun and establish Ogun State Disability rights Commission where issues of persons with Disabilities can effectively be addressed and increase accessibility and mass education of deaf members of the society.

The South West Coordinator of Associations of the Deaf, Mr Sule Akinremi called for inclusion of the Deaf in Ogun State with the power of recognising sign language thereby creating equal opportunities for all.

In his keynote address Guest Speaker Dr Olalekan Muhammed of Special Education Department, Lagos State University emphasized on the need for the Deaf people to believe in themselves and display potentials anywhere they are.

The association in the spirit of the season presented special Christmas Carol to the admiration of the audience. There was also presentations of awards of recognition to deserving individuals and organisations.
