Team Nigeria recorded an impressive outing in para powerlifting at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, securing one gold and two silver medals as Esther Nworgu, Esther Oyema, and Roland Ezuruike delivered podium finishes for the country.
Esther Nworgu clinched Nigeria’s first gold medal of the Games after producing a record-breaking performance in the women’s lightweight event. She lifted 119.0 points to set a new Commonwealth Games record, finishing ahead of the field and reaffirming Nigeria’s dominance in para powerlifting.
Nigeria further strengthened its performance in the women’s lightweight category as veteran lifter Esther Oyema claimed the silver medal with a total of 115.0+ points, completing a remarkable one-two finish for Team Nigeria. In the men’s Lightweight Group A event, Roland Ezuruike also secured silver after an impressive display that saw him narrowly miss out on the gold medal.
The three-medal haul provided an early boost to Nigeria’s campaign in Glasgow and highlighted the country’s continued excellence in para powerlifting. Nworgu’s record-setting victory, alongside Oyema’s consistency and Ezuruike’s resilience, reinforces Team Nigeria’s status as a global force in the sport, with hopes high for more medal-winning performances as the Games continue.
