The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) held a two-day capacity-building workshop on October 9th and 10th, 2024, in Abia State, aimed at strengthening the roles of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and government agencies in crafting a disability-inclusive climate change response.
The workshop opened with remarks commending the Abia State Government for its continued commitment and collaboration with the program. Mr. Damian Ivom delivered two key presentations, the first exploring the intersection between disability and climate change, and the second focused on designing and implementing climate adaptation strategies that include PWDs. These sessions provided participants with critical insights into the ways climate change affects PWDs and how inclusive policies can be developed to ensure resilience for all.
Representatives from the Abia State Ministries of Health, Environment, and Budget and Planning gave goodwill messages, showing a strong desire to integrate these learnings into their ongoing work to make government initiatives more inclusive.
On the second day, participants examined climate change impacts specific to PWDs, along with strategies for adaptation and mitigation in the local context. Dr. Chukwudum Queensley facilitated the discussions, emphasizing that PWDs can serve as innovators and agents of change for a more sustainable future.
Hon. David Anyaele, Chairman of the Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Disabled Persons, expressed optimism that the knowledge gained from the workshop would be reflected in future government policies and budgetary plans.
