The Borno State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) through inclusive policies and programmes designed to improve their welfare, promote self-reliance and enhance their participation in the socio-economic development of the state.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman A. Tar, gave the assurance when he received the leadership of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JNAPWD), Borno State Chapter, led by its Chairman, Mallam Mustapha, during a courtesy visit to his office.
Prof. Tar said the administration of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum remained committed to creating an enabling environment for PWDs by providing the necessary support, opportunities and facilities to improve their livelihoods and ensure their inclusion in the development process.
He also reaffirmed the government’s determination to strengthen disability inclusion through legislative reforms, noting that the proposed Disability Rights Bill was a major step towards protecting the rights and welfare of PWDs in the state.
Earlier, the JNAPWD Chairman, Mallam Mustapha, commended Governor Zulum for forwarding an Executive Communication to the Borno State House of Assembly seeking the enactment of the Disability Rights Bill. He disclosed that the bill had successfully passed its second reading and was expected to undergo the remaining legislative processes before passage and subsequent assent by the governor.
According to him, the proposed legislation also provides for the establishment of the Borno State Disability Welfare Board, which he said would provide stronger institutional support and coordination of programmes for PWDs across the state.
The association expressed appreciation to the Borno State Government for what it described as its sustained commitment to promoting the rights, welfare, empowerment and inclusion of Persons with Disabilities.
