by Sejoro Ekundayo

The Yobe state Association of the Deaf has called for expansion and upgrading of special education unit in Yobe state University to create first of its kind special education department in the entire North East region of Nigeria.

The call was made when the chairman of the association, Mr Abubakar Mohammed, represented by secretary general, Mudansiru Lawan Dogo, paid courtesy visit to the vice chancellor’s office along with some executive members with a letter of appreciation to the vice chancellor for granting registration waiver to persons with disabilities across Yobe state.

After listening to their appeals, the Vice Chancellor (VC), professor Mala Mohammed Dausa immediately directed the Deputy Vice Chancellor (administration) to contact National Universities Commission on any requirement needed to establish special education program in the university, and commence preparations on the establishment of the department.

The VC also pledged to continue giving free education to students with disabilities across the state, and promised to visit the only special school in Yobe state to see where he can offer assistance.

INN reports that, Mr. Ibrahim Bukar Goniri, the deputy coordinator of the special education unit and founder of the special education center Goniri established in 2004, played vital roles that ensure persons with disabilities get the registration waiver from the University.
