Advocacy Group Calls for Inclusion of Women with Disabilities in Climate Action, Disaster Planning

by Sejoro Ekundayo

The Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative (AWWDI) has called on individuals, policymakers, and organizations to champion inclusivity in climate policies and ensure that disaster response mechanisms are accessible to all, particularly women with disabilities.

This call was made during a street awareness campaign in Kurudu Community, where AWWDI engaged residents in discussions about the disproportionate impacts of climate change on persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The group shed light on how climate disasters often prevent PWDs from accessing crucial resources such as relief supplies, safe shelters, and sustainable means of livelihood.

AWWDI stressed that women with disabilities face compounded challenges during climate-related crises. These include increased vulnerability to gender-based violence, marginalization from disaster preparedness initiatives, and inadequate access to essential support systems. By fostering awareness, AWWDI aims to inspire communities and decision-makers to adopt inclusive strategies that address these pressing issues.

Reaffirming its dedication to this cause, the organization assured stakeholders of its ongoing efforts to ensure PWDs are represented in all aspects of climate action and disaster management.
