Disability commission tasks FCC on employment of persons with disabilities

The Executive Secretary National Commission for Persons with Disabilities Mr James David Lalu has enjoined the Federal Character Commission to use the virtue of its mandate to ensure that Persons with Disabilities get the 5% target on employment opportunities across the 6 geo- political zones and 36 States of the Federation.

The ES made this appeal in his office yesterday, 14th July, 2021 during the National Technical Working Group Meeting on Access to Employment for Persons with Disabilities.

He also expressed his delight at the turn out in the meeting and the commitments shown by the Participants as he further charged members to be more strategic in their approach while brainstorming on the prevalent issues and to come out with a commendable template which will accommodate PWDs across the 36 states of the federation.

Lalu in addition, charged the committee to make themselves watchdogs over Ministries, Extra- Ministerial Departments and Agencies of government including Parastatals in terms of employment and to safeguard the interests of Persons with disabilities.

The ES reiterated on his visit to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation where the SGF Mr Boss Mustafa promised total support for Persons with Disabilities and assured that a circular would be issued to validate his positive stance for the Commission in a near future.

Earlier in her goodwill message the Federal Commissioner, Federal Character Commission Ambassador Ginika Tor, affirmed the Committee’s readiness to give sufficient assistance to NCPWD in order to achieve beyond the 5% provisions for PWDs.

Uche Nwokedi of Rolac also lent her voice to the advocacy and promised to provide the Commission with adequate data that emanated from the assessment conducted across the country to ensure that no one was left behind.

Conversely, the meeting resolved to extend the limb to other Geo- Political Zones of the country in subsequent days and weeks to gain more robust deliberations and better outcome.

The event had in attendance representatives from Federal Character Commission, Civil Society Organization, Rule of Law and Anti Corruption (Rolac), Sight Savers and Management and staff of NCPWD.
