Lalu Inspects FG’s Housing Units For Persons With Disabilities, Calls for Adjustments Of Some Structures

In acquiescence to President Muhammadu Buhari’s resolve to take 100 million Nigerians out of extreme poverty in the next 10 years and providing shelter to all Nigerians through Federal Government Housing scheme, the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons with Disabilities Mr. James David Lalu today, 6th of July, 2021 embarked on a facility tour to inspect the state of infrastructure at the Federal Government construction sites along lugbe and DeiDei axis in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.

Head of media and publicity of NCPWD, Mbanefo Johnmichael I disclosed this in a press statement made available to Inclusive News Network on Tuesday.

While fielding questions from the Journalists Lalu commended the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari for recognizing the need to make provisions that would cater for the basic needs of Persons with Disabilities and the resolve of Mr. President to pull one hundred million Nigerians out of poverty in the next ten years.

Lalu further pointed to section 27 of the provisions of the establishment Act of the Commission where it was clearly stated that 5% of the Housing benefits is reserved for Persons with Disabilities.

He reiterated that Persons with disabilities experience difficulties in many aspects of life especially the inability to have a home for themselves and further stated that lack of shelter adversely affects efficiency both home and office.

Lalu subsequently seized the occasion to appeal to all relevant authorities to consider 5-10% discount for Persons with Disabilities so as to ensure ease of access to the Houses. He similarly informed that the “Rent-To-Own” format is one scheme that many PWDs would subscribe to upon completion.

Speaking further, the ES reiterated that Persons With disabilities would soon come up with their customized Housing model which would contain all the designs needed to suit the needs of the PWDs.

He counselled the contractors on site to adjust some structural designs in order to accommodate PWDs. The engineers however gave assurance to effect the necessary changes as suggested by the ES.

The site engineer at Brains and Hammers Dei’Dei, Mr. Emmanuel Attai affirmed that the structures have in consideration Persons with Disabilities and would suit their purpose. He revealed that 30 units of the Houses are ready for take-ups as soon as subscribers show interest.

The inspection team guided by a representative of the Federal Mortgage Bank, Mr. Olayinka Lawal who took the ES and other staff of the Commission to the two locations explained that the projects were 80% financed by the Federal Mortgage Bank.

“Both the Wiser Estate, Centenary village along Airport road and the Brains and Harmmers Estate at Dei-Dei both are 80% financed by FMB” he said.
