The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities on Tuesday 11th hosted Muslim faithfuls during Iftar to symbolically mark end of the month long fastings. The gathering provided an avenue for warmth, communalism and a level playing ground with the high and mighty sitting together with the meek and lowly to eat and drink in a spirit of oneness.
Executive Secretary James Lalu welcomed all participants while reminding them that the purpose of the gathering simply to eat, drink, and be merry.
Further corroborating the Executive Secretary’s position was former All Progressive Congress disability group leader and Founder of Para Soccer, Alhaji Misbahu Lawal Didi. Did I reiterated that protocols isn’t required in an event of this nature and as such everyone should go ahead to eat and make merry.
The meal was opened by Senator Yusuf A. Yusuf, Chair, Senate Committee on Special Duties. He was followed by other dignitaries whose presence were duly registered.
At the event, Mr. James Lalu exemplified the selfless and dedicated servant leader when he rolled up his sleeves to help in serving the guests. He was seen going round to ensure everyone was well fed. A servant-leader indeed, Mr Lalu certainly has been there having trod similar path for some 24 years. He knows what it is to be a PWD on the street and hasn’t allowed position to make him forget his humble background. True to the old saying, Lalu certainly knows where the shoe pinches most.

While thanking the ES for his selfless service and commitment to putting smiles on the faces of PWD, Alhaji Didi mplored Persons with Disabilities to pray for their leader Mr. James Lalu, and by extension, the Commission so they can function properly and bring succor to the Disability Community.
Senator Yusuf A. Yusuf in his closing remarks thanked the President Muhammad Buhari led administration for establishing the Commission as well as for hosting the best hands to lead it. As Sen. Yusuf puts it, “it takes a Person with a Disability to understand the plight of his fellows with disabilities”.
The Senate Chair further thanked the ES and urged him not to relent. He went on to issue a challenge that PWDs desist from begging and negative vices and to embrace positive virtues.
In attendance at the Iftar which ended in a high note were Senator Yusuf A. Yusuf, Hon. Danjuma Attah, SSA to the President on Special Needs, Staff of the National Assembly, Stakeholders In Disability Community, Management and staff of the Commission, with friends and well wishers.
