Professor Olabode Bamigbola from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Ilorin postulated that Nigeria can use mathematical optimization and the scientific approach to solve the problem of insecurity.
Mr Bamigbola said this on Friday at the university’s 207th inaugural lesson, titled: “Make the best use of what you have: the mathematical approach”.
Don, who teaches at the university’s Faculty of Physical Sciences, observed that the problems that militate against achieving the optimization of our national life are insecurity.

He listed them as terrorism, banditry, kidnappings and the shepherd problem, unemployment, economic challenges and unstable electricity supply, among others.
According to him, all these problems can be solved by using a mathematical and scientific approach in their resolution.
“Mathematical optimization techniques can be used to improve the economic fortunes of a nation. It is amazing how the United States, Russia, China, India and South Africa develop their national development with the application of mathematics.
“By controlling key parameters of our economy, price fluctuations can be kept abreast.
“Two important strategies used in mathematical optimization ensure system improvement and the elimination of waste. Policies and practices that are hostile to progress and growth should be avoided, ”he said.
Likewise, the math expert observed that one of the signs of the country’s underdevelopment is the relentless cuts in electricity supply.
He explained that the disruption of electricity supply not only disrupts processes and service delivery, but is also a harbinger of the many dangers that plague such a community.
“The Nigerian government should rally its support to allow a steady supply of electricity,” he advised.
Bamigbola also recommended a regular review of mathematics curricula at all levels of education with the aim of accommodating the rapidly expanding frontiers of mathematical knowledge in terms of concept, content, methodology and adaptation.
