by Sejoro Ekundayo

Network of Disabled Women, NDW has awarded scholarship grants to some 20 students with disabilities as tuition support for their studies.

This disclosure was made by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NDW, Lois Auta-Udonkanta in an interview with Inclusive News Network, INN. The NDW boss said the grant was supported by ActionAid Nigeria and funded by Global Affairs Canada.

In her words: “We have given out scholarship awards of N20,000 each to 20 young girls with disabilities, the objective of which is to support their education through the payment of school fees to help them resume school post-Covid. The support was also intended to help those who are unable to pay their school fees and might drop out.”

Auta-Udonkanta also thanked ActionAid Nigeria and Global Affairs Canada for the supports over the years.

A beneficiary of the grant, Julia Musa, a 19 year old girl from Jos was represented by Mrs. Miyausa Wayuta Mshelia. Wayuta told INN, that as a deaf girl, Musa was not enrolled in school on time last term. Fortunately for her, NDW’s scholarship support came before Christmas last year December so she was able to resume school early this term.

“We appreciate them (NDW) for considering her. She really needed that grant support and it came at the right time”, she said.

Miyausa further appealed for more support for the girl as she said the N20,000 offered could only cover half of her school fees.

Favor Vohembe, visually impaired student of GSS, Kwali and beneficiary of the scholarship funds expressed gratitude on behalf of herself and two colleagues, Janet Fagbuyi and Jacinta Odili, who benefited from the grant. She remarked: “It is a day I will never forget because I was thinking of how I will resume school having lost my dad in 2019. Luckily, God used the organization to meet my need. May God bless, increase, guide and protect you and your families, ma”, she concluded.

Another beneficiary, Favour Micheal, a girl with albinism had his mother speak with our correspondent on phone to thank NDW for the support.
