Oladeji Caleb, an eleven-year old Child of a Deaf Adult (CODA) is in the race for “Ultimate Interpreter Challenge”, an event organized to showcase and reward Sign Language interpreting skills among interpreters in Nigeria.
Little Caleb is among 61 contestants jostling for a grand prize of #300,000 to be carted home by the top winner.
Speaking to our correspondent on why he joined the challenge, Caleb said “I joined this challenge to enable me display the little sign language skills I have learned so far. And also to encourage other young CODAs like me to be bold for their parents.”
With the race getting hotter and generating increased public excitement since organizers announced the first stage of the competition, Caleb, who learned sign language to make communication easier with his single Deaf mummy, Oladeji Oluwasola, told Inclusive News Network that he hopes to arrive the final stage of the competition if given the chance.
Caleb says if he wins the challenge, the money will be given to his mum to start a small business and help care for him and his younger sister.
“I will give it to my mummy so she can start some small business that will enable her care for me and my little sister”.
Caleb also encouraged voters to try and learn sign language to help bridge the communication gap between the deaf and hearing world.
Ultimate interpreter Challenge is an online competition organized by Seams Consult for interpreting talents in Nigeria.
