The Yobe State Chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD) has called for the establishment of a Special School in Damaturu, the State capital.
Chairman of JONAPWD, Yobe State Chapter, Usman Bura made the call when he paid a courtesy visit to the office of the Commissioner of Education in the State.
Bura said the Special School, if established, will have a multiplying effect and particularly ensure inclusive education in the area.
“What we need is a Special School which will ensure inclusive education whereby they will be accessible to classes.
“This is because most of our people beg on the streets. But if there is education whereby they can attend classes, they will become independent and street begging will be reduced to the minimal,” he said.
The JONAPWD Chairman also commended the Vice Chancellor of Yobe State University for ensuring that People with Disabilities (PWDs) get admission.
He said the reduction of tuition fees for PWDs applying for admission has also served as a morale booster for the students.
“Now many of them have applied to the University and some have already graduated this year and the number of people that have applied has increased.
“So if there is this Special School here in Damaturu, it will also encourage more people living with disabilities to want to be educated,” Bura said.
