The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Working Committee on Inclusive Education, convened a high-level workshop to drive the revision and implementation of Nigeria’s National Policy on Inclusive Education.
The workshop, themed “Strengthening Inclusive Education for Equitable Learning in Nigeria”, was held on July 22, 2025, at the Federal Ministry of Education Headquarters in Abuja. It brought together key stakeholders to discuss strategies for domesticating the policy across all 36 states of the federation. The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4, which advocates inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Adebukola Adebayo, Technical Assistant to the NCPWD, described the workshop as a crucial platform for advocacy. “It offers stakeholders and committee members the opportunity to align perspectives, identify challenges, and craft coordinated strategies towards building a more inclusive education system in Nigeria,” he said.
In her opening remarks, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, emphasized the government’s unwavering dedication to inclusive learning. “This workshop marks a pivotal moment in our collective effort to mainstream inclusive education within Nigeria’s educational framework,” she said. “It reaffirms our commitment to ensuring that every child—regardless of disability, gender, background, or circumstance—has equal opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.”
Prof. Ahmad further noted that inclusive education is not only about policy implementation but about ensuring collective action toward building a society where everyone can flourish.
Providing an overview of the revised policy, Mr. Kehinde Ogunbiyitan, a member of the National Inclusive Education Committee, called on government agencies, stakeholders, and partners to develop strategic action plans to raise awareness and support inclusive practices in both public and private schools across Nigeria.
Key development partners who contributed to the success of the workshop include Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE), Sightsavers Nigeria, British Council, UNICEF, PLAN International, and TAF Africa.
In a united voice, stakeholders at the workshop reaffirmed their commitment to working with the NCPWD to ensure the effective implementation of the National Inclusive Education Policy across the country.
