Damaturu, Yobe State – Efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Yobe State Disability Law received a boost as the Taimako Community Development Initiative (TCDI) convened a two-day symposium for the Yobe State Commission for Persons with Disabilities, heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), civil society organisations and other key stakeholders to promote disability inclusion and improve compliance with the law.
The symposium, taking place at the Olive Petals Hotel in Damaturu, is bringing together government officials, disability advocates and organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) to deepen stakeholders’ understanding of the legal framework protecting the rights of persons with disabilities and to foster stronger institutional collaboration for its effective implementation.
Representatives of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) are facilitating technical sessions focused on the provisions of the Disability Law, the rights of persons with disabilities and the responsibilities of public institutions in ensuring full compliance. The sessions are expected to equip participants with the knowledge and practical tools needed to advance disability-inclusive governance and service delivery in Yobe State.
Participants at the symposium highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration among government institutions, civil society organisations and OPDs, noting that effective partnerships are essential to translating the provisions of the Disability Law into meaningful improvements in the lives of persons with disabilities.
The two-day engagement also provides a platform for stakeholders to examine challenges hindering the implementation of disability policies, exchange practical solutions and develop strategies for promoting accessibility, equal opportunities and the full participation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society.
Organisers expressed optimism that the symposium would strengthen coordination among relevant MDAs and reinforce ongoing efforts to ensure the effective implementation of the Yobe State Disability Law, paving the way for a more inclusive and accessible society for all.
