ABUJA, Nigeria — The Nigeria National Association of the Deaf has congratulated workers across the country on the 2026 International Workers’ Day, while commending Deaf professionals for their resilience and contributions to national development despite persistent barriers.
In a statement issued on May 1, the association’s National President, Haruna Muhammad Tsafe, praised members of the Deaf community for their dedication, professionalism, and commitment in various sectors of the economy. He noted that their efforts continue to inspire progress and inclusion within Nigeria’s workforce.
The group also acknowledged the broader Nigerian workforce, including public and private sector employees, artisans, entrepreneurs, and labour leaders, whose efforts sustain the nation’s economy. It used the occasion to call for safer, more inclusive, and accessible working environments for all workers.
The association further urged government at all levels, employers, and the organised private sector to fully implement provisions of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, particularly the five percent employment quota for persons with disabilities. It also called for reasonable workplace accommodations, including sign language interpreters, accessible communication, and assistive devices, while demanding an end to discrimination in recruitment, promotion, and training of Deaf workers.
Reaffirming its support for Deaf employees nationwide, the association encouraged them to remain steadfast in breaking barriers and advancing inclusion, stressing that their rights are fundamental human rights.
