by Inclusive News Network

Wesley School 1 for the Hearing Impaired, Surulere, has emerged winner of the 2026 Interactive Quiz Competition organised by the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) to promote inclusive education and showcase the intellectual abilities of pupils with disabilities.

The competition, held on Tuesday, October 13, at Lagos State Special School, Igbobi, brought together pupils from special and inclusive schools across Lagos State to test their knowledge, build confidence and encourage healthy competition.

Speaking at the event, LASODA General Manager, Mrs Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, represented by the agency’s Director of Medical Rehabilitation, Mobility Aids and Appliances, Mr Folorunsho Viavonu, reaffirmed the importance of providing children with disabilities equal opportunities to learn, participate and excel.

She stressed that access to education must go beyond school enrolment to include acceptance, adequate support and an enabling environment where every child can reach their full potential.

Oyetunde-Lawal also urged parents and caregivers to remain actively involved in their children’s education, encouraging them to recognise individual abilities, avoid unfair comparisons and support children in pursuing their aspirations regardless of disability.

At the end of the competition, Wesley School 1 for the Hearing Impaired, Surulere, clinched first position, while Atunda-Olu Special School, Surulere, came second. Lagos State Special School, Igbobi, finished third, followed by LG Primary Inclusive School, Ipakodo, Ikorodu, in fourth place and Ojuwoye Primary Inclusive School, Mushin, in fifth position. Methodist Primary Inclusive School, Igbogbo, came sixth.

The programme also featured a health education session delivered by the Director of Medical Services and Disease Control, Lagos State Health District IV, Dr Oludolapo Sotunde, who educated the pupils on health-related practices to promote their well-being.

In a motivational session, specialist educator Mr Temitope Ogundepo encouraged the pupils to embrace healthy competition, learn from one another and build positive relationships. He emphasised that every participant was a winner, regardless of their final position, noting that the experience offered valuable lessons and opportunities for personal development.

The competition was coordinated by quiz masters Mr Azeez Aliu and Mr Adeife Michael, alongside timekeeper Mr Babajide Ajayi. Teachers, pupils, LASODA directors and other agency officials attended the event.

Inclusive News Network reports that the initiative underscores LASODA’s efforts to promote disability inclusion in education and create opportunities for pupils with disabilities to demonstrate their abilities, develop their potential and thrive in an inclusive learning environment.
