Stakeholders, community leaders, and residents in Damagum, Fune Local Government Area of Yobe State, have commenced a three-month training programme on basic sign language and braille aimed at promoting inclusion and improving communication with persons with disabilities.
The initiative is being organised by Protection Without Borders in collaboration with Joyce Initiative for Women and Children Development, while the training is being facilitated by the Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Nigeria under the leadership of Lawan Mustapha.
Speaking during the opening session, the facilitators said the programme was designed to equip participants with practical communication skills in sign language and basic knowledge of braille to improve interaction and understanding with members of the deaf and visually impaired communities.
They explained that the initiative would also strengthen community participation, encourage equal access to information, and promote respect for the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities in the society.
Participants at the training expressed appreciation to the organisers for introducing the programme, describing it as timely and important in building a more inclusive society where persons with disabilities can actively participate without communication barriers.
