Soludo Urged to Develop Support Program for Senior Citizens with Disabilities

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has been called upon to prioritize a welfare scheme that supports elderly citizens with disabilities.

This appeal was voiced during a recent workshop held by the Anambra State Disability Rights Commission (ASDRC) in Awka.

The workshop aimed to improve the legal awareness and access to justice for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

During discussions, it was noted that many senior citizens with disabilities face numerous challenges that require targeted solutions to enhance their well-being and overall quality of life.

Participants highlighted that a well-designed welfare program could address essential areas such as healthcare, mobility support, assistive technology, caregiver services, and housing. Financial aid for medical bills, equipment, and care personnel was also seen as key to improving the lives of these individuals.

ASDRC Chairman, Barrister Chuks Ezewuzie, expressed that such a scheme would be a significant achievement for the current administration, as Section 23 of the state’s disability rights law mandates social security for citizens with disabilities aged 60 and above. He stressed that this is a legal requirement, not a mere suggestion.

Ezewuzie revealed that the commission has already included provisions for senior citizens’ welfare in its 2025 budget and is hopeful for the governor’s approval.
