SDGs: NCPWD Advocates for Inclusive Development

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has advocated for the integration of disability-inclusive policies and initiatives within the framework of sustainable development goals.

The Executive Secretary of the commission, Dr. James Lalu made the call while paying distinguished visit to the office of Her Excellency Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Adviser to the President on Sustainable Development Goals on Tuesday.

The visit was aimed at fostering a dialogue centered on advancing inclusivity and accessibility for Persons with Disabilities within national development agendas.

In his address, Dr. James D Lalu underscored the pivotal role of Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire office in fostering community development, commending the ongoing efforts aimed at improving the lives of citizens, particularly those residing in rural areas. Dr. Lalu expressed admiration for Her Excellency’s steadfast commitment to her responsibilities, emphasizing the imperative for special considerations and interventions tailored to the needs of Persons with Disabilities.

While highlighting the challenges faced by Persons with Disabilities, particularly in accessing essential services such as physical therapy, Dr. Lalu passionately advocated for the integration of disability-inclusive policies and initiatives within the framework of sustainable development goals. He urged for collaborative efforts between the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities and the office of the Senior Special Adviser to realize the vision of an inclusive Nigeria.

Responding to the call to action, Her Excellency Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire reaffirmed her office’s unwavering dedication to championing the rights and welfare of Persons with Disabilities. She expressed her heartfelt concern over the inadequate structures hindering accessibility and reiterated her commitment to addressing these pressing issues.

Orelope-Adefulire proposed the establishment of a joint committee comprising representatives from both offices.

This committee is charged with the responsibility of devising a strategic plan for the implementation of inclusive policies and projects and is tasked to deliver actionable recommendations within one month.

The Commission commends the proactive approach demonstrated by Her Excellency Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire and her office towards fostering inclusivity and accessibility.
