The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa, has called for stronger collaboration with the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) to promote inclusive energy policies and improve opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the nation’s energy sector.
Hon. Abba Isa made the call during an advocacy visit to the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
During the meeting, the presidential aide emphasized the need for accessible infrastructure, inclusive policies, and greater representation of PWDs within Nigeria’s energy value chain. He noted that the visit aligns with the mandate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure disability perspectives are integrated across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, as well as sub-national institutions involved in national development planning and implementation.
Abba Isa expressed concern over the continued exclusion of Persons with Disabilities in the energy sector, stressing that deliberate measures must be taken to guarantee equal opportunities and accessibility for vulnerable groups. According to him, disability inclusion is not only a matter of social justice but also essential for innovation and sustainable development.
He further urged the Commission to incorporate inclusive design principles into its programmes and infrastructure projects to ensure that no one is left behind in Nigeria’s energy transition and reform agenda.
Responding, the Director-General of the ECN, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, welcomed the advocacy initiative and reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to working closely with the Office of the SSA on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities. He stated that inclusive energy access remains vital to achieving Nigeria’s broader development objectives.
