Oyo Govt Increases Budget for Persons with Disabilities by Over 70%

by Inclusive News Network

The Oyo State Government has approved a 70% increase in the 2025 capital budget for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), raising the allocation from N492 million in 2024 to N877.5 million. Additionally, the overhead costs for the Oyo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities have increased from N315 million to N345 million.

Governor Seyi Makinde, represented by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, made the announcement during the 2024 Stakeholders’ Summit and International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebration in Ibadan. He attributed the budget increase to input received during the Budget Town Hall meetings, where PWDs outlined their needs, including transportation empowerment, assistive devices, and training programs.

The Governor highlighted his administration’s commitment to inclusion by recruiting 510 PWDs into the civil service and protecting their employment quotas across ministries. He also reappointed Barrister Ayodele Adekanmbi as the Director-General of the Oyo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities and facilitated operational improvements, including grants, subventions, and three new vehicles for the agency.

Makinde emphasized his administration’s inclusive governance approach, noting the appointment of PWDs as Supervisory Councilors and Special Assistants in all local governments.

Director-General Adekanmbi commended the administration’s efforts, stating, “Governor Makinde’s initiatives have improved access to governance and quality of life for persons with disabilities.”
