by Inclusive News Network

On Friday, October 18, 2024, Nigeria’s Deaf Eagles delivered an outstanding performance, thrashing Niger Republic 4-0 to claim the title in the 12th edition of the West Africa Deaf Football Championship. The match, held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena (Onikan Stadium), saw the Nigerian team dominate from start to finish, securing their fifth championship victory.

From the opening whistle, the Nigerian side made their intentions clear. Their star player, Salaudeen Saley, donning the No. 9 jersey, wasted no time in putting Nigeria ahead, scoring the first goal within minutes of kick-off. The Eagles maintained their relentless attack, and twenty-five minutes later, Salaudeen doubled the lead, giving Nigeria a comfortable 2-0 advantage at halftime.

Not content with two goals, Salaudeen completed his hat trick early in the second half, bringing the score to 3-0 and all but sealing the victory. Emeka Ikechukwu added the finishing touch with a fourth goal, ensuring the Deaf Eagles’ total dominance and placing the game well out of Niger’s reach.

This resounding victory marks Nigeria’s fifth time lifting the prestigious trophy, with their last triumph dating back to 2017 in Mali. The triumph also highlights Coach Kamiludeen Banjo’s tactical brilliance, which steered the team to another remarkable win.

The event was praised for its flawless organization, with Mr. Sadeck TChagnaou, representative of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), commending the efforts of the West Africa Deaf Sports Union (WADSU) and the Nigeria Deaf Sports Federation (NDSF). He presented the trophy to the jubilant Nigerian team and expressed optimism about the tournament’s future, vowing it would continue as an annual event.
