In a bid to alleviate the hardship faced by many Nigerians, the North East Development Commission (NEDC) has distributed relief materials to the most vulnerable communities in Adamawa, including people with disabilities (PWDs). The commission provided both food and non-food items to the Adamawa State Government for equitable distribution to those in need.
Representing NEDC’s Managing Director, Mohammed Goni Alkali, the acting Coordinator for Adamawa State, Fatima Bakari, emphasized that these donations were aimed at helping the less privileged. The relief items included rice, spaghetti, vegetable oil, mats, children’s clothing, and blankets, particularly for flood victims.
The Managing Director further explained that these essentials would be shared among religious groups, PWDs, and other vulnerable members of society.
Beyond immediate aid, the NEDC has also strengthened the state’s agricultural sector by providing the Adamawa Food Security Committee with vital machinery. This includes 16 rice mills, 8 oil press machines, 35 walking tractors, and other tools to boost food production and enhance food security.
In line with their broader objectives, NEDC has launched capacity-building programs for 400 youths, focusing on areas such as renewable energy, solar installations, climate change adaptation, and waste management.
Moreover, the commission is partnering with the Adamawa State Government to prevent future flooding in the state capital. They have undertaken the desilting and clearing of 60,000 meters of drainage systems to reduce the risk of flooding.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) have expressed gratitude to NEDC for their timely and impactful intervention.
Dishi Kwabe, Chairman of the State Food Security Committee, applauded the initiative, assuring that the items will be distributed fairly to address hunger and hardship. This effort reflects NEDC’s continuous commitment to uplifting vulnerable communities in the North East.
