by Inclusive News Network

To further expand the frontiers of partnership for inclusivity of Persons with Disabilities in Nigeria, the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Mr James David Lalu has called for more interventions on capacity building for accessibility standard compliance and designs by structural engineers of public facilities in Nigeria.

Lalu made this call recently in Abuja while in a parley with a delegation from the Christian Blind Mission International, CBM.

Speaking at the meeting, the Executive Secretary affirmed that the call for inclusions is a life long issue and it is necessary for all Nigerians to advocate for an all inclusive society.

“May I also inform you that a considerable percentage of the current 10th National Assembly members in Nigeria do not have substantial knowledge of disability issues and as such, it limits their input towards raising motions for legislations on disability matters ” he opined.

He, therefore, urged that CBM should endeavor to organize training sessions for the Law makers in order to make meaningful impacts that will underscore the stance of Nigeria at international Protocols on disabilities.

The Executive Secretary further called for an additional inclusive curriculum at the Federal University of Lafia which will include Sign Language as an official language in Nigeria to help in bridging the communication gaps.

However, the Regional Director of Christian Blind Mission International, Mr Bright Ikeremadu described CMB’s relationship with NCPWD as a formidable synergy aimed at ending discrimination and all forms of deprivation among Persons With Disabilities.

He also emphasized on the Group’s commitments in ensuring that every person with disability irrespective of their situation is included in the community through capacity building in order to receive a better service support system, social insurance system etc.

“CBM is working towards the development process to achieve all their goals by impacting the life of Persons with Disabilities in all ramifications”, he added.

He further called on the Commission to give maximum support to various clusters in order to make their goal at CMB attainable.

He however, bemoaned lack of accessibility at the Banking vicinity which makes the ATM machine not easily accessible for Persons with Disabilities.
