NCPWD Convenes National Forum to Strengthen Disability Governance in Nigeria

by Inclusive News Network

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has convened a virtual forum involving Disability Commissions and Agencies across the country as part of efforts to strengthen disability governance and improve coordination on disability inclusion policies in Nigeria.

The meeting, held on April 21, brought together Chairpersons, Executive Secretaries, Directors-General, and heads of State Disability Commissions and Agencies to deliberate on strategies for advancing the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities nationwide.

Speaking during the forum, the Executive Secretary of NCPWD and Chairman of the Forum, Ayuba Burki Gufwan, described the initiative as a strategic platform designed to promote collective action, coordinated advocacy, and measurable impact for persons with disabilities across the federation.

According to him, the forum represents a timely step toward strengthening Nigeria’s disability governance structure and ensuring effective implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.

Discussions at the meeting focused on key issues including strategies for collective resource mobilisation, the establishment of a National Disability Management Information System (NDMIS), and the development of a National Reporting Template for the production of an Annual National Disability Inclusion Report.

Participants also received updates from various state commissions, agencies, and the NCPWD, while sharing success stories, challenges, and recommendations aimed at improving disability inclusion efforts across the country.

Hon. Gufwan urged members to leverage the platform to exchange ideas, strengthen partnerships, and work collaboratively toward advancing the interests of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.
