Chief Ayuba Gufwan, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), paid a significant visit to the Christian Blind Mission (CBM) headquarters in Abuja on October 31, 2024.

He underscored the essential role of precise data in advocating for and ensuring inclusivity for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria. Reflecting on his personal journey, Chief Gufwan shared how CBM played a pivotal role in his education, calling his connection to the organization “divine.”

During the visit, Chief Gufwan expressed concerns about the challenges caused by unverified data, including the widely cited figure of 35.5 million Nigerians with disabilities. He highlighted the urgent need for accurate data collection across various disabilities and gender groups to shape inclusive policies.

“Our approach to inclusivity is comprehensive, and achieving this relies on data accuracy,” he remarked.

Chief Gufwan affirmed his commitment to enhancing the NCPWD-CBM partnership and emphasized his readiness to seek increased support to improve resources and opportunities for PWDs.

“At every chance, I am prepared to ask for more on behalf of persons with disabilities,” he pledged, reaffirming his dedication to their well-being.

CBM’s Country Director, Mr. Abdulaziz Musa, welcomed this collaboration, emphasizing CBM’s commitment to the Commission’s goals.

“The Commission’s success is CBM’s success as well,” he said, noting the importance of fully implementing the Disability Act as a foundation for supporting the Commission’s strategic initiatives.

Mr. Musa also emphasized that transparency and clear communication are crucial to fostering support and reducing the stigma surrounding PWDs.

Dr. Adebukola Adebayo, the World Bank’s representative to the Commission, spoke about the importance of capacity building and intersectoral coordination. He urged CBM to assist in developing robust frameworks that further the Commission’s goals.

“Working together to establish sustainable structures and aligned priorities will boost our efforts to meet the needs of persons with disabilities,” he added.

This visit marks a meaningful step in strengthening the partnership between NCPWD and CBM as they collaborate to create a more inclusive environment for PWDs across Nigeria.
