As part of the activities marking this year’s International Day for Persons with Disabilities, the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) has provided financial assistance of N200,000 each to 150 senior citizens living with disabilities in Lagos State.
The empowerment program, held on December 2, 2023, at the LCCI Conference and Exhibition Centre in Ikeja, was themed “Empowering Senior Citizens, Enabling Independence: A Commitment to Inclusion and Dignity.” Speaking at the event, LASODA’s General Manager, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, emphasized that the initiative underscores the state government’s dedication to fostering a supportive environment for all residents, regardless of age or physical ability.
According to Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal, the program aims to address the healthcare needs of elderly citizens with disabilities while promoting their independence, dignity, and inclusion in society.
“Today, the state government is not only recognizing our elderly but also addressing their healthcare needs and overall well-being. We are providing financial assistance to seniors with disabilities above the age of 60, alongside comprehensive health checks, including tests for blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and other vital parameters,” she said.
She further highlighted the inclusion of caregivers over 60 years old who support children with disabilities.
“We recognize that many parents in this age group continue to care for their children with disabilities. In line with the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to inclusivity, we have extended this program to them as well,” she added.
Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the elderly with disabilities feel valued and supported through healthcare schemes and similar initiatives. She expressed hope that such programs would inspire replication across other states and at the national level.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Mrs. Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, represented by the Director of Admin and Human Resources, Mr. Abiodun Dina, reaffirmed the Sanwo-Olu administration’s dedication to the welfare of the elderly, stating that the initiative aligns with the government’s THEMES developmental agenda.
Medical experts at the event provided health checks and administered free medication to beneficiaries as needed, ensuring their immediate healthcare concerns were addressed.
This impactful program is one of many initiatives by LASODA to improve the lives of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Lagos, demonstrating a strong commitment to inclusion and dignity.
