The Lagos State government, through the Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), has organized a sensitization program aimed at promoting oral hygiene and overall health awareness among persons with disabilities (PWDs).
According to LASODA, this initiative seeks to enhance awareness and improve the well-being of individuals with special needs by addressing the importance of proper oral care.
Speaking at the event, which took place at the STO Resource Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, the General Manager of LASODA, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, emphasized the theme, “Oral Health: A Key to Cardiovascular Health.” She highlighted the critical health challenges that individuals with disabilities face due to poor oral hygiene, which, if neglected, could lead to severe medical complications.
Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal explained that the program was particularly focused on the oral-systemic connection, emphasizing that maintaining good oral hygiene contributes to heart health. She noted that the initiative was designed to equip approximately 200 participants with the necessary knowledge, tools, and resources to improve their oral health and, by extension, their overall quality of life.
“Many people are unaware that oral health is directly linked to brain function,” she stated. “Some of our special children lack the ability or muscular strength to brush their teeth properly, making them reliant on both occupational and physical therapy to develop the required strength for oral care. Unfortunately, many of them suffer from poor oral hygiene, which can have long-term consequences.”
She further explained that the program sought to educate parents on the relationship between nutrition and oral health while providing expert recommendations on how they could better support their children’s dental hygiene.
“In addition to raising awareness, we are conducting on-the-spot dental scaling and polishing for participants. Many of our special children will receive free dental assessments today, with nearly 100 individuals benefiting from the procedures. We hope that this initiative will not only continue but also expand in the future to accommodate even more beneficiaries.”
Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal stressed the importance of taking proactive measures to ensure a healthier future for all. She reiterated that oral health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, yet it is often overlooked. She also assured that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains committed to increasing awareness, implementing sustainable solutions, and providing essential support in this area.
Delivering a keynote address at the event, Dr. Funmi Adeniyi, the Guest Speaker, underscored the necessity of regular tooth brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist at least twice a year to prevent oral diseases. She urged parents and caregivers to encourage their children to drink more water and consume fruits and vegetables as part of preventive oral care measures.
“We must prioritize visiting the dentist at least twice a year. Regular brushing will go a long way in preventing oral health issues. It is also important to seek out dentists who specialize in treating persons with disabilities (PWDs). Moreover, parents should make brushing fun and engaging for children to encourage good oral hygiene habits,” she advised.
Several attendees, who received free dental care services during the event, expressed their gratitude to the Lagos State government and LASODA for organizing a program that directly addresses the unique oral hygiene challenges faced by persons with disabilities. They acknowledged that the initiative provided much-needed practical guidance and essential oral healthcare services tailored to their needs.
