In a significant move toward inclusion and protection, the Lagos State Government has hosted a two-day advocacy training for persons with disabilities, aimed at educating them on sexual and gender-based violence, their legal rights, and avenues for redress.
The training, held at Amber Residence in Ikeja, was spearheaded by the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency in collaboration with the Office for Disability Affairs and International IDEA. It targeted leaders of various disability clusters—people living with albinism, hearing or visual impairments, and short stature—equipping them with vital knowledge to empower their communities.
Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of the DSVA, said the goal was to ensure that persons with disabilities are not left behind in the fight against abuse. “This training teaches them not only their rights but also how to access services and support. We want them to know that help is available—and free,” she said.
According to her, awareness efforts have led to increased reporting: “In 2022, we served 11 PWD survivors. By 2023, that number had more than doubled. This is progress, and we expect even more as awareness grows.”
The event also featured remarks from LASODA’s General Manager, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, who called for more such initiatives, noting that “conversations like these are rare, yet vital to ensuring equal access to justice.”
Mrs. Abimbola Ushie from International IDEA emphasized self-advocacy, urging participants to champion their own rights: “You know where the shoe pinches. No one can speak for you better than you.”
Participants expressed gratitude to the government and organisers, describing the training as eye-opening and empowering, particularly in helping them understand their rights and how to seek justice and support.
