Kano State to Establish Disability Commission, Reinforces Global Commitments

by Inclusive News Network

The Kano State Government has announced plans to establish a dedicated commission for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), reinforcing its commitment to disability inclusion following Nigeria’s participation in the Global Disability Summit 2025.

Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, made the disclosure, stating that the forthcoming commission will oversee policy coordination, advocacy, and enforcement of disability rights in accordance with the state’s disability law.

“The initiative is designed to uphold the rights and welfare of PWDs, particularly in the areas of education, healthcare, and infrastructure,” Waiya said.

This development aligns with growing national advocacy for the implementation of the resolutions adopted at the recent Global Disability Summit.

Dr. Bisi Bamishe, President of the Albinism Association of Nigeria (AAN), urged government at all levels to translate summit commitments into tangible actions. “The Global Disability Summit is not just symbolic—it’s a call to action. Kano must lead by example,” she said.

Also speaking, AAN Vice President Hajia Mariya Ishaaka highlighted the neglect of the albinism community and expressed hope that the proposed commission would address their long-standing concerns.
