JONAPWD Commends Peaceful Elections as Yobe Deaf Association Elects New Executives

The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Yobe State Chapter, has applauded the exemplary sportsmanship and peaceful conduct demonstrated during the recent elections of the Yobe State Association of the Deaf.

The election, held on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at Bindigari Primary School in Damaturu, Yobe State, was monitored by key stakeholders, including the North East Zonal Coordinator of the Nigerian National Association of the Deaf (NNAD), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Ministry of Youth, and security agencies. Their presence ensured the process was free, fair, and credible.

Inclusive News Network (INN) reports that the election adopted an open-secret ballot system. Delegates from the 17 Local Government Areas of the state, including at least one or two women per delegation, were granted the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidates.

The following are the confirmed positions contested, along with the names of winners, runners-up, and invalid votes as announced by the Electoral Committee, chaired by Mr. Dahiru Adamu:

Observers commended the delegates and candidates for their discipline and adherence to electoral rules, ensuring a violence-free process. The peaceful atmosphere greatly facilitated the work of security agencies, further enhancing the credibility of the elections.

Yawudima Barma, Administration Secretary of the JONAPWD who led it’s group, expressed optimism that the newly elected executives would work diligently to promote inclusivity and the interests of the deaf community across the state.

INN reports that the newly elected executives will steer the affairs of the association for the next four years.
