In a significant step toward fostering accessibility and inclusion, the inaugural meeting of the Association of Accessibility Professionals (AAP) was held, marking the start of a new era for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria.
Among the attendees was Mohammed Abba Isa, Senior Special Assistant on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, a key advocate and supporter of the association.
Isa proudly addressed the gathering, emphasizing the strides made in advancing accessibility for PWDs.
The AAP was formed in alignment with the mandate of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who aims to ensure that the needs and perspectives of PWDs are integrated into the policies and programs of government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
Isa highlighted that the association would collaborate with local authorities to build a national consensus on PWD-friendly policies and environments, a mission that will elevate Nigeria’s commitment to the National Disability Act.
“By uniting professionals, consultants, and organizations, the AAP will drive compliance with the National Disability Act, advocate for accessible public spaces, and ensure that policies prioritize PWDs,” Isa stated. “This association serves as a vital bridge between government and society, ensuring that the rights of PWDs remain central to our planning and policies.”
Pledging full support for the AAP’s initiatives, Isa affirmed that his office would work closely with the association to build an inclusive Nigeria for all citizens.
Expressing confidence in the new partnership, he added, “Together, we will create a nation where accessibility is ingrained in education, employment, healthcare, and public services, ensuring no one is left behind.”
