The Ikorodu West Deaf Development Association (IKWDDA) has called for the provision of sign language interpreters in health institutions and other public spaces.
This appeal was made on Thursday to commemorate the International Day of Sign Languages, themed “Sign Up for Sign Language Rights.”
Speaking at the event, Deaconess Adedoyin Beyioku-Alase, former National President of the Deaf Women Association of Nigeria (DWAN), emphasized the urgent need for sign language interpreters at Ikorodu General Hospital.
“In general hospitals, we need capable sign language interpreters,” she said. “If interpreters are available, communication will be much easier than relying on writing, which can be time-consuming and inconvenient for many deaf individuals. Additionally, more people should be encouraged to learn sign language to improve communication and inclusivity.”
Dr. Odutola Odusanya, a retired lecturer from the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo, also advocated for the inclusion of sign language in all facets of national life.
He highlighted that deaf individuals face significant challenges in accessing healthcare without interpreters. According to him, “When the government fails to provide sign language interpreters, it creates barriers for deaf people in accessing healthcare services. Communication barriers between the deaf and medical personnel have led to numerous misdiagnoses and preventable deaths.”
Dr. Odusanya urged hearing individuals to support the campaign for sign language interpreters in public spaces. “Continuous advocacy is necessary to achieve equal representation and access for deaf people in education, healthcare, religion, employment, empowerment, and information,” he added.
Mr. Kuku Tosin, Chairman of IKWDDA, reiterated the importance of sign language interpreters in public spaces, particularly in government offices. He noted that this step is vital for fostering inclusivity and accessibility within the community.
Dr. Taiwo Kamorudeen Hassan, the Medical Director of Ikorodu General Hospital, assured the association of the hospital’s commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities.
Represented by Dr. Luro Sunday Adesegun, Assistant Deputy Medical Director, Dr. Hassan acknowledged the difficulties faced by the deaf in accessing healthcare services. “As stakeholders, we recognize the challenges and discrimination faced by persons with disabilities, particularly the deaf, in accessing healthcare,” he said.
He also highlighted the hospital’s collaborations with the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and assured continued efforts to provide quality healthcare for the deaf community.
The Executive Chairman of Ikorodu West LCDA, Hon. Sulaimon Kazeem Olanrewaju, represented by Mr. Kayode Animashaun, pledged the administration’s commitment to continued support for the deaf community.
