In a powerful display of unity and determination, persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Bauchi State commemorated the 2024 International Day for Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD) with a call to action. The group urged the state government to prioritize free education and create inclusive leadership opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
The highlight of the day was an advocacy visit to the Government House in Bauchi, where the delegation championed the creation of an equitable environment that ensures equality and opportunities for all. The IDPWD annually emphasizes the challenges faced by persons with disabilities and seeks to inspire actions that empower them to thrive and contribute to society.
Speaking on behalf of the association, State Chairman Iliya Ismail passionately appealed for increased access to free and inclusive education. He stressed the importance of integrating persons with disabilities into mainstream learning environments, ensuring they are not marginalized. Additionally, Ismail called for proportional representation of persons with disabilities in leadership positions across every sector of the state.
“We must collectively build a society where no one is left behind, and every individual—regardless of ability—has access to opportunities that drive growth and development,” Ismail stated. He expressed hope that the government would implement meaningful policies to create an inclusive and sustainable future.
In response, Barrister Ibrahim Kashim, Secretary to the State Government, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing the welfare of persons with disabilities in Bauchi. Kashim assured the delegation that their requests would receive thorough attention, with concrete measures to address their concerns.
Governor Bala Mohammed, represented by Kashim, echoed this sentiment, pledging to enhance inclusivity and ensure persons with disabilities have a voice in governance. He emphasized that the state’s leadership remains dedicated to creating an equitable society for all citizens.
This year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” highlights the urgent global need to empower persons with disabilities and integrate them into leadership roles. It underscores the invaluable contributions they can make toward sustainable development.
