Abuja – The House Committee on Disability, chaired by Hon. Bashiru Daudu, on [insert date], conducted an oversight visit to the headquarters of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) in Abuja.
The visit, conducted in accordance with Section 88 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is part of the National Assembly’s mandate to assess the performance of government institutions. The focus was to evaluate the Commission’s progress in advancing the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities (PWDs).
During the meeting, Hon. Daudu underscored the need for the Commission to remain aligned with its core vision and mission. He recalled the many years of persistent advocacy, protests, and legislative efforts that led to the enactment of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act in 2018 and the subsequent establishment of the NCPWD in 2020.
“Our mission here is to assess how effectively the Commission is implementing relevant policies and laws, to identify operational challenges, and to offer recommendations for improved service delivery,” Hon. Daudu stated.
The Committee praised the Commission’s ongoing initiatives in promoting disability rights and inclusion but also pointed out areas where improvements are needed. It reaffirmed its commitment to providing legislative support and working collaboratively with the Commission to expand its impact across the country.
In his response, the Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, expressed appreciation for the Committee’s consistent support and reiterated the Commission’s dedication to inclusive development.
“We are actively working towards establishing zonal offices and introducing new welfare strategies to reach persons with disabilities in all 36 states. Our goal remains to ensure that no one is left behind,” said Hon. Gufwan.
The visit concluded with a strong reaffirmation from both the House Committee and the NCPWD of their shared commitment to protecting, promoting, and upholding the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities throughout Nigeria.
