Group Urges Extension of N50,000 Monthly Empowerment Initiative to PWDs Across Local Govts

by Sejoro Ekundayo

The Coalition of Disability Self Advocacy Network (CDSAN) has called on the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to extend his 50,000 naira monthly empowerment initiative to persons with disabilities (PwDs) across all 44 local government areas in the state.

Currently, the initiative benefits women across the local governments. However, in an open letter to commemorate the governor’s 62nd birthday, the Secretary-General of CDSAN, Engr. Abdul Haruna, emphasized the importance of including PwDs in the program. He stated that such an extension would not only uplift a marginalized group but also enhance their independence, enable them to contribute meaningfully to society, reduce street begging, and inspire others with their resilience and strength.

Engr. Haruna, who has a spinal cord injury, remarked, “The monthly women empowerment program instituted by His Excellency, providing 50,000 naira to support women across the 44 local governments, has been a beacon of hope for many. This initiative has not only alleviated financial struggles but has also empowered women to pursue their dreams, contribute to the economy, and improve the lives of their families.”

In his letter, Haruna continued, “As we celebrate these remarkable achievements on the occasion of Alhaji Abba Gida Gida’s birthday, I humbly draw His Excellency’s attention to the plight of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). Sir, PwDs face unique challenges, especially in the current economic climate, many of which are worsened by limited access to resources and opportunities.”

He further appealed to the governor, saying, “While the empowerment initiative has already transformed the lives of countless women, I respectfully urge His Excellency to consider including more PwDs in the program. Extending the 50,000 naira monthly support to this vulnerable group across the 44 local governments would not only empower them but also inspire hope, foster independence, and encourage a society where everyone can thrive.”
