Group Partners with NiMet to Enhance Weather Services for Persons with Disabilities

by Inclusive News Network

The Advocacy for Women with Disabilities Initiative (AWWDI) has formalized its partnership with the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at addressing climate change and weather-related challenges faced by persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The agreement focuses on improving access to weather forecasts and climate information for PWDs, enabling them to better adapt to environmental changes and prepare for extreme weather events.

Under the partnership, NiMet and AWWDI will develop inclusive weather reports and climate adaptation strategies. These will be tailored to the needs of PWDs, using accessible formats such as braille, audio, and sign language. The initiative also seeks to build awareness among PWD communities about climate change impacts and equip them with tools for proactive responses.

“This collaboration highlights the urgent need for inclusive climate action,” said the Patience Ogolo-Dickson, Executive Director of AWWDI. “By making weather information accessible, we can reduce the vulnerability of persons with disabilities to climate-related disasters.”

AWWDI has long championed the rights and inclusion of women with disabilities. This partnership represents a significant milestone in its mission to ensure environmental and social justice for vulnerable groups.

NiMet’s role in creating inclusive weather services demonstrates a commitment to equity and sustainability, further aligning with national goals of inclusive development.
