Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has approved the appointment of Ibrahim Sani as Special Assistant on Sign Language Interpretation, in a move aimed at strengthening inclusive governance and improving communication with persons with hearing impairments across the state.
The appointment was announced in a statement issued by the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government, Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, who described the decision as part of the administration’s commitment to ensuring that no citizen is excluded from governance because of disability.
According to the statement, the appointment is expected to bridge communication gaps between the government and persons with hearing impairments, enabling them to access information and actively participate in government programmes and activities. It added that the initiative is in line with the provisions of the Zamfara State Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Law.
Ibrahim Sani is a certified Sign Language Interpreter and trained Special Education teacher with more than a decade of experience in education and disability inclusion advocacy. Between 2015 and 2023, he served at the School for Special Education, Gusau, where he rose to the position of Vice Principal (Academics).
The newly appointed Special Assistant holds a Bachelor of Science Education (B.Sc.Ed.) in Special Education and Rehabilitation Science from the University of Jos, as well as a Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) in Special Education/English from the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo.
Sani also served as Chairman of the Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Nigeria (ASLIN), Zamfara State Chapter, from 2018 to 2025, and currently serves as the association’s Northwest Zonal Coordinator.
Governor Lawal expressed confidence that the appointee would leverage his professional experience to advance disability inclusion in the state and ensure that persons with hearing impairments have full access to government information, policies, and programmes.
The appointment is seen as another step in the Zamfara State Government’s efforts to promote equal participation, accessibility, and the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities through inclusive public service delivery.
