Foundation urges PDP to appoint PWDs as Ministers, Commissioners at National and Sub National Cabinet

by Sejoro Ekundayo

The Albion Foundation (TAF) Africa has called for appointment of persons with disabilities as Ministers and Commissioners at the National and sub-national cabinet.

The Founder/CEO, Amb. Jake Epelle made the appeal while paying advocacy visit to the People’s democratic party National Working Committee through able-to-serve campaign.

Epelle charged the leadership of the party to strengthen the internal democracy of the People’s Democratic Party to accommodate the community of persons with disabilities because according to him, “PWDs have what it takes to be a part of a participatory democracy.”

He also tasked the leadership of the party on the need to commit to ensuring that governors elected under the PDP appoint persons with disabilities to serve as members of their cabinets in their various states.

The Acting PDP National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagun called on persons with disabilities to join the People’s democratic party as the environment for PWDs to aspire for any elective or appointive position has already been created.

He said it is already enshrined in the party’s constitution to have a percentage of persons with disabilities as delegates, party members, and rights to contest for any position from the national down to the ward level.

The National Women’s leader, Prof. Stella Effah-Attoe retorted that the People’s democratic party’s structure accommodates PWDs at all levels and provides a level playing ground for everyone in the spirit of inclusivity.

She assured the TAF Africa team that the National working committee will come up as a pressure group to push for the inclusion and appointment of persons with disabilities at the national level and sub-national cabinets.
