In a significant step towards inclusive community development, the Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria (DSFN) has paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of Bogoro Local Government Area in Bauchi State, Hon. Surv. Lawi Yakubu Sumi. The visit aimed to strengthen collaboration for improved service delivery, especially for women with disabilities in the area.
Receiving the delegation, Hon. Lawi Yakubu Sumi praised the foundation’s proactive efforts to support vulnerable groups. He expressed appreciation for their dedication and assured them of the local government’s full support in ensuring their programs reach the intended beneficiaries across Bogoro LGA.
“The Down Syndrome Foundation’s vision aligns with our administration’s commitment to inclusivity, particularly for women and children with special needs,” the Chairman said. “We are eager to partner with organizations that add value to our communities.”
Mrs. Nike Dennis, who led the DSFN team, reiterated the foundation’s mission to support individuals with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities. She emphasized DSFN’s focus areas, which include education, advocacy, family support, medical care, vocational training, empowerment, and community inclusion.
Also speaking at the meeting, Princess Gungdi Markus—Founder of the GUNGDI Community Support Foundation and DSFN’s contact person—commended the Chairman for the warm reception. She revealed that approximately 50 women and girls from Bogoro LGA are poised to benefit from DSFN’s upcoming initiatives.
“This program is designed to raise awareness, build capacity, and empower both individuals and families living with Down syndrome,” she noted. “Our ultimate aim is to foster a more inclusive society where their rights and potential are fully realized.”
The meeting received strong backing from traditional rulers and stakeholders across Bogoro LGA, all of whom pledged their support to ensure the success of the foundation’s programs.
This collaboration represents a promising step forward in uniting government and civil society efforts to address the challenges faced by people with disabilities—affirming Bogoro LGA’s dedication to inclusive, people-centered governance.
