NGO Urges End to Discrimination Against Women With Disabilities: “They Are Human Too”

In a determined effort to uphold the rights and dignity of women with disabilities, the Down Syndrome Foundation has launched an advocacy campaign in Bauchi State. The initiative aims to combat gender-based violence and affirm the right of women with disabilities to live free from abuse and discrimination.

Speaking during a safety awareness engagement with over 100 women with disabilities in Bogoro Local Government Area, Mrs. Nike Dennis, Administrator of the Foundation, called for greater recognition of the humanity of persons with disabilities.

She emphasized that intellectual disabilities—conditions that impair intelligence and hinder independent living—often emerge in childhood and result in lifelong challenges. These individuals are particularly vulnerable to abuse and neglect in their communities.

As part of the advocacy effort, the Foundation presented a compelling photo exhibition featuring about 50 individuals in Bogoro LGA living with various forms of intellectual disabilities, aimed at fostering empathy and awareness.

Mrs. Dennis stressed that these women face not only the burden of their disabilities but also suffer from sexual abuse and community-based discrimination, making it essential to advocate for their protection and inclusion.

During a stakeholders’ meeting held as part of the campaign, the member representing Bogoro in the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Hon. Musa Nakwada, along with the Executive Secretary of the Bauchi State Agency for Persons Living with Disabilities, Briska Jarom, pledged their support and commitment to safeguarding the rights of persons with disabilities.

The Down Syndrome Foundation continues to call on the public and authorities to uphold the dignity, rights, and safety of women with intellectual disabilities, insisting that they be treated with the respect and compassion every human being deserves.
