In a bid to foster inclusivity in education, the Friends of the Deaf International Foundation, in partnership with the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, hosted the 4th edition of the Inclusive Spelling Bee. The event was held at the Daniel Akintonde Model School for Children with Special Needs, Adigbe, Abeokuta.
The competition brought together children with various disabilities, offering them a platform to showcase their remarkable spelling abilities and to affirm their place in an inclusive educational system.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of the Foundation, Mrs. Funmi Ogunro, emphasized the importance of promoting a culture of inclusion and acceptance in all spheres of education. Her efforts were lauded by the Director of Special Education, Mrs. Deborah Ogundimu, who commended the initiative as a significant contribution to disability-inclusive development in the state.
Also present at the event was Chief Bangbelu Shodiya, who expressed delight at being part of the impactful gathering and encouraged the Foundation to sustain its commendable work.
Mrs Ola-Williams Maureen of Lyceum College praised the initiative, stressing the importance of recognizing and celebrating the unique talents of children with disabilities. She called on government authorities to increase support for this often-overlooked group.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Rotimi Akinlesi, highlighted the importance of inclusive practices. He cited the recent appointment of visually impaired musician Cohbams Asuquo by renowned artist Davido as an encouraging sign of growing societal recognition of persons with disabilities.
All participating children were honoured with gold medals, educational support materials, and gift hampers in recognition of their efforts and achievements.
The event, which coincided with the International Day for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, sent a strong message about the power of inclusion, inspiring children with special needs to believe in themselves and their potential.
