As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, the Founder of YASA Foundation, Yeye Bobajiro Oodua Afolashade Shona-Aluko, has called for greater inclusion, dignity and opportunities for persons with disabilities and other vulnerable Nigerians.
Chief Shona-Aluko made the call while speaking with Radio Nigeria Ibadan, urging Nigerians to use the Independence anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s journey, celebrate its resilience and renew their commitment to building a society where every citizen has a meaningful place.
She stressed that persons with disabilities should not be defined by their limitations, but recognised as Nigerians with talents, aspirations and valuable contributions to national development.
The YASA Foundation Founder urged governments, non-governmental organisations, philanthropists, community leaders and individuals to strengthen partnerships that would expand access to education, healthcare, skills acquisition, employment and other opportunities for vulnerable Nigerians.
She also called on Nigerians to embrace compassion, unity and inclusion, noting that the strength of the country lies in its ability to accommodate its diversity and ensure that no one is left behind.
As Nigeria celebrates 66 years of independence, Chief Shona-Aluko expressed optimism that through collective responsibility, inclusive policies and a genuine commitment to citizens’ welfare, the country can build a future where every Nigerian, irrespective of disability or social status, has the opportunity to thrive.
