Aiming to improve the quality of education for children with special needs, the Lyceum Foundation, an NGO, has called for increased and effective funding from both federal and state governments.
During a workshop for educators held at St. Peter College in Olomore, Abeokuta, the foundation’s Director, Mrs. Maureen Ola-Williams, emphasized the necessity of providing essential teaching resources to make learning accessible for students with disabilities.
Mrs. Ola-Williams urged the government to show a dedicated interest in special needs education by increasing public awareness and investing in teacher training. “Without a committed interest, we cannot make progress,” she said. “Proper training and resources are essential for teachers to manage students with learning disabilities or other special needs effectively.”
The workshop, themed “Empowering Teachers to Support Children with Special Education Needs (SEN) and Learning Difficulties,” was a collaborative event with the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and saw the participation of over 100 teachers from all over the state.
According to Mrs. Ola-Williams, “Creating an inclusive environment requires awareness, acceptance, and most importantly, funding. Equipped classrooms and well-trained teachers would make education not only accessible but also enjoyable and productive for students with disabilities.”
Mrs. Ola-Williams also encouraged parents of special needs children to embrace and support their children wholeheartedly. “Acceptance, love, and care from parents can open doors for these children. We must focus on their abilities rather than their disabilities,” she added, highlighting the potential within each child to excel with the right environment.
Mr. Gbenro Olusoji, Deputy Director of the Department of Special Needs Education in the Ogun State Ministry of Education, commended the Lyceum Foundation for its efforts. He noted that government efforts combined with partnerships like this workshop would significantly enhance the quality of education for every child, regardless of ability.
