The Federal Government has announced plans to enroll two million children with disabilities into schools nationwide as part of efforts to promote inclusive and accessible education under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
This commitment was highlighted during a working visit by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Mohammed Abba Isa, alongside the former Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Dr. James David Lalu, to the Honourable Minister of Education to discuss the implementation of the Renewed Hope National Programme on Inclusive and Accessible Education.
During the meeting, the delegation drew attention to the ongoing challenges confronting children with disabilities, noting that many are still out of school, while those already enrolled often lack accessible infrastructure, trained teachers, and essential assistive devices required for effective learning.
The programme also includes plans to retrofit ten thousand public schools to make them accessible, train one hundred thousand teachers in inclusive education, and expand the availability of assistive technologies and specialized learning materials across the country.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa expressed strong commitment to the initiative and agreed to convene an expanded meeting involving heads of agencies and directors within the Federal Ministry of Education to align policies and fast-track implementation.
The Renewed Hope National Programme on Inclusive and Accessible Education is aimed at promoting dignity, equity, and equal opportunities for children with disabilities, ensuring that no child is left behind in the nation’s education system.
Mohammed Abba Isa reaffirmed the administration’s determination to deliver measurable results through the programme, emphasizing that inclusive education remains central to national development and social inclusion.
